MISSION SUMMARY

The Mission of Soft Landings Parrot Rescue, Inc. is to provide a place for companion parrots that are in need of a safe haven while between homes; to educate existing or potential parrot owners about the special needs inherent with keeping companion parrots as pets; and make every effort to find suitable Forever homes for those parrots that are adoptable and provide sanctuary for those who are not.

VISION

We believe that every  parrot kept as a companion animal deserves to:
  1. Have a safe, clean environment in which to live with access to fresh food and plenty of clean water.
  2. Have housing of adequate size to allow for free movement and exercise.
  3. Have access to proper avian veterinary care.
  4. Have sufficient daily companion interaction and enrichment activities.
  5. Not be thought of as a “starter bird.”  Companion parrots of all sizes, from parakeets to the largest
macaw, deserve to be thought of as lifetime family members and not as a stepping stone to another species..

A mESSAGE FROM cO-FOUNDER, lISA

Every One

Parrots are so often an overlooked and even a surprise part of the rescue community. I once was also surprised when I discovered that parrot rescue existed and that the need was so overwhelming. Today parrots in need is my daily life and reality. Pretty much no day goes by that I don't get an email, a Facebook message or a phone call of another parrot needing a safe place to go. The reasons are as common and as varied as those of all of the other species. "We just don't have enough time." "We are moving." "A family member passed away and no one can take it." One of the other reasons that we get is unprepared and uneducated owners who are in over their heads. They get charmed by a colorful pet that talks and can ride on their shoulder. Then they get them home and discover the reality of living with a feathered dinosaur that rivals the decibel level of a jet engine that can eat their house and leave a trail of rubble in their wake, and sometimes they bite...and it hurts. A LOT.

No matter the reasons, we are there. We work long and hard to provide everything they need.
We provide them with the medical care to ensure that there are no health issues and if there are we can address them.
We provide a healthy diet to promote good health.
We provide enrichment for their amazingly intelligent brains.
We want to engage and encourage their innate sense of curiosity and thinking.
We provide them with a safe environment. In our work we also spend much time educating the humans to all of the above and so much more. We want to unlock for the humans the knowledge to be able to provide all of the above for the feathered companions they may already have or wish to bring into their family.

NOT EVERY ANIMAL THAT FINDS ITSELF IN RESCUE HAS BEEN RESCUED. NOT EVERY ANIMAL IN RESCUE HAS BEEN ABUSED OR NEGLECTED.
Please read that again. We have taken in birds from loving homes. Sometimes life happens and sometimes owners pass away. Sometimes we do rescue animals. I have walked through situations so bad that I have brought birds out of that I literally threw my shoes away. Then I cried, and cried some more. Those horrific scenes play behind my eyes like a slideshow when I close my them. When I watch birds from each extreme begin to understand, to trust my heart is as full as it could ever be. When I watch them select their new family my heart sings.

My family and volunteers go so far above and beyond to provide the best possible happy ending to each bird that comes under our care. They give me hope in a world that can many times feel cold, dark and cruel. They are the light. Parrots live a long, long time. It is not uncommon for them to outlive more than one owner. Our work is so vital so that they have a safe place to come on their journey. Their care does not come cheap. Good food, many toys, safe cages and medical care are costly. We work hard to have the resources to be able to always provide exactly what they need. Sometimes we are all digging into our own pockets without a second thought to ensure that is the case. We never cut corners, we never compromise care or safety. Sometimes we have to say no because we know that we do not have the resources to stretch further. This is always like a knife to the heart because then we don't know what will happen for that bird.

Every one is valuable, when I say this I don't mean in monetary measures. I mean that they are a living, breathing sentient being. It matters not to use if it is a finch or a macaw, their lives are equal to us. Every one deserves safety, security, good food, competent medical care, enrichment. Every one matters. Every one has a personality and a soul. Every one I will fight the good fight to provide the best that I can.

Why We Do This

Bird Rescues are rare in Oklahoma and our rescue fills a major need.  We are a home based parrot rescue in the Northeastern Oklahoma area. We provide resources to existing parrot owners,  assist in the placement of parrots that are in need of a forever home, and provide sanctuary for companion parrots who are not able to be adopted.
